HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SUMMER!
Summer has officially arrived in London, and by officially, I mean according to the solstice, moon and sun. Warmth did make an appearance a few months prior (read my post SPRING WHO?) where London was luckily basking in upwards of 25 degrees. This time around, the heat has been turned up a notch as we are expecting in the region of 33...
So what does one do in this fine weather? Enjoy it of course! I personally think summer is all about festivals (I used to go all the time but haven't been to one in ages 😩) so here are a few favourites that I would highly recommend in your lifetime. Talk about a trip down memory lane...
After a hiatus last year, Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is back with a bang for 2019. Expect to see the likes of Stormzy storming the Pyramid Stage, legendary Lauryn Hill making an unexpected appearance, new kid (literally) on the block Billie Eilish and indie rock veterans The Killers and The Cure. There are also some new areas called Arcadia's Pangea and Glastonbury-On-Sea. The iconic festival is also becoming more environmentally friendly by banning the sale of single use plastic and hosting an Extinction Rebellion procession from The Park to The Green Fields. Blue Planet's Sir David Attenborough will also be giving a talk. If you didn't manage to get your hands on a ticket, you can watch the show in its entirety from the comfort of your own home on BBC iPlayer. I have been to Glastonbury twice before (once in 2008 and once in 2013) and recall seeing The Rolling Stones, Amy Winehouse and going backstage with my then boyfriend who happened to be a photographer for some of the bands...
Another brilliant festival in a beautiful Spanish beach-side location is Festival Internacional de Benicà ssim or FIB. I went with some good friends from Goldsmiths in 2011 and remember seeing The Killers, stumbling into a Franz Ferdinand gig and absolutely loving it, missing out on Kings of Leon because of a forest fire and getting evacuated into a proper English boozer that had framed Tom Cruise pictures all over the wall lol...
One festival that I didn't need a tent or hotel for was Lovebox in London's Victoria Park in 2012... think Hot Chip and Crystal Fighters...
If you are more into your dance and techno music, I would recommend Global Gathering in a field somewhere (I believe they have taken a hiatus from the UK and moved sound systems and stages to Japan...) and EXIT in Serbia, both of which I have been to in my short lived raver days. The first one I went with my first every boyfriend 😌 and the second with one of my oldest friends Zara. One festival I would really like to go to is Download. A proper rock festival with an iconic line up. Think Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Slayer. They don't make them like that anymore...
What To Wear
Festivals are a whole catwalk show of their own and the undisputed queen is Kate Moss. Blouses are a great choice this year as are sparkly hair clips and scrunchies. Topshop have a great selection in an array of materials and patterns including patent leather, pink and leopard print...
Another massive trend for SS19 is tie-dye (read my post TIE-DYE!) and a festival is the perfect place to rock it. Think Woodstock of 1969 with hippies and peace and love vibes everywhere ✌️ Free People have gone kaleidoscope crazy with tops, jumpers, tights, jeans, boots and bags all covered in the psychedelic print and this Prada Visor from Net-A-Porter is just to DYE for...
Cross bags or clear back packs are also perfect for festivals as you don't really want to be carrying one across on your shoulders. It is also handy to be able to see what you need without having to rummage around for ages. Established travel label Eastpak have some great cool examples in white and pink...
In the makeup department, I would suggest glitter pots with glue and cat eye all the way. I would give the foundation a miss because it will probably end up down your face and stick to a bit of concealer and highlight (YSL Touch éclat). Festivals are all about being eau natural anyway...
Finally, it is not a festival without a leather jacket and a pair of patent Dr Martens to complete the look...

Survival Tips
Be sure to pack Face Wipes, Washlets, double the amount of socks and underwear, Toothbrush and Paste, Suncream, Evian water bottles pack (not at Glastonbury mind...), cat eye sunglasses, a waterproof jacket (or make your own out of bin bags like I did one year...), trusted patent hunter wellies and of course a simple sturdy tent and sleeping bag if you plan on slumming it.
Finally, don't be a litter bug! Be kind to the animals and land and take your tent, plastic bottles and rubbish home with you. Litter is one of the number one causes of ocean garbage...
