CLIMATE CHANGE

Everywhere you look, someone is writing, talking or protesting about climate change. Take The Extinction Rebellion that has brought London to a stand still for six months, Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish activist behind the global school strike movement FridaysForFuture and Leonardo DiCaprio, the actor turned philanthropist who uses his fame and platforms to raise awareness for environmental concerns...

And rightly so. Catastrophic changes to the world we live in are real and are taking place. Just look at earth's temperature rise, the state of the oceans, animals going extinct and entire ecosystems collapsing...

I believe the reason we have got to this point lies in five key factors: fossil fuels, plastics, poaching, deforestation and greed. Let us start with the first and main aggressor I think: fossil fuels. The Guardian recently carried out an investigation into the world's biggest polluters and Saudi Aramco and National Iranian Oil were high up on the list...

Today, with help from leading scientists and NGOs, we can expose the fossil fuel companies most responsible for perpetuating the climate crisis. It's an investigation that's involved more than 20 Guardian journalists working across the world for the past six months. We hope it moves the focus of the debate from individual responsibilities to power structures and presses governments and corporations to close the gap between ambitious long-term promises and lacklustre short-term action. The UN says the coming decade is crucial if the world is going to avoid the most catastrophic consequences of global heating. Reining in our dependence on fossil fuels and dramatically accelerating the transition to renewable energy has never been more urgent. But we cannot put all the blame on Saudi Arabia and Iran. The West are the ones buying this oil and gas to make their countries run. We would all be freezing and walking to work if it were not for fossil fuels. Renewable alternatives in the form of solar panels, wind farms and electric cars are coming through but are they enough...

Next we have plastics, a non-biodegradable material making it vital that it is recycled, but recycling systems in some parts of the world are non-existent or not up to the job. Last year China stopped all waste from being shipped to its shores leaving many countries crap in chaos. Recycling plants in the US have closed down and plastic is ending up in landfills and incinerators. Littering is also a big problem, particularly for marine wildlife. A recent survey revealed 42% of young beachgoers admitting to leaving their rubbish on the shores. Fishing boats in Tenby have also been spotted illegally dumping. We need to educate people on the dangers of dropping, implement heftier fines, introduce more beach bins and improve coastal waste management and watchouts. ร‰vian's new initiative starring cool kid Luka Sabbat encourages people to take small actions to help 'keep bottles out of nature'...

Poaching and deforestation breaks my heart as I am a huge animal lover. The recent Amazon rainforest fire due to cattle ranching goes to show the immoral extent to which humans and politicians will go to for profit. The hunting of rhinos and elephants for ivory and tigers for their skins and bones is another cruel example of money over morality. The heroes are the ones putting their lives on the line to protect these animals around the clock like the rangers from Congo's Virunga National Park who went viral with two orphaned gorillas in rightly the best selfie...

At the heart of climate change are big business, consumerism and the economy. We could all make huge adjustments to the way we live our lives and what and how much we buy. Politicians need to keep the country running and companies are all about the pound signs. It ultimately comes down to us as humans, oil and gas corporations and the government to make the necessary changes needed...

It is not all doom and gloom however. China's halt on recyclable materials has forced many countries to wake up to their waste problem and expand operations, upgrade equipment and add workers. The European Parliament recently approved a ban on single-use plastics and many countries have stopped the use of non-biodegradable bags. Actors such as Will Smith and Jason Mamoa have even brought out their own environmentally friendly water cartons and cans...

I am not an expert on climate change nor do I proclaim to lead a 100% sustainable life. I recycle religiously and only buy what I need or really like ๐Ÿ˜Š These are my own words from keeping up with the news and the issues and solutions in my mind. I do believe that with our dependence on fossil fuels declining regimes like Iran and Venezuela will struggle to survive...
